Hurricane Isaac Evacuees Rely on COVER Program for Lodging and Safety
With Hurricane Isaac projected to slam into the Gulf Coast this week, the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism has activated the COVER program, a custom online disaster recovery software developed in 2009 by Aristotle Inc.
As Hurricane Isaac approaches, many on the coast are taking precautions and may be evacuating into Arkansas. COVER (Communication of Vacancies Emergency Response Plan) facilitates hurricane evacuation by informing evacuees of available lodging around Arkansas.
After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, when hurricane evacuation drove 1.1 million people from their homes, the idea of an online disaster recovery software that could notify travelers about available lodging was turned into a reality by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Aristotle software developers.
By visiting Arkansas.com/cover, lodging industry partners can update their listings and vacancies quickly and efficiently. Evacuees can then easily get the information they need to make plans and arrangements.
The information entered into the COVER database is instantly distributed across the state to welcome centers, through automatic email and text message notifications, and, of course, on the department’s website at Arkansas.com.
